Being At Work

We all have to work, that's a given, even if we have all the money in the world, there is always something to do, places to go, people to meet - which is work related. As we all have to work, being at work more often than not we have deadlines, meetings scheduled, admin to do. Work takes our entire day, nearly eight of those twenty four hours. Sometimes just sometimes we can feel that over worked, over stressed feeling of "work" getting us down.

Today I just want to share a few tips of what I do in my working day to make my day a little bit less stress related, having that over worked feeling.

  • I check my desk in the mornings, all those little odd pieces of paper lying around - those little critters, if it's in the done file - those get's a file. I get up and file them, in it's place. Done and dusted. Never to be looked at again.
  • Before I even look at my e-mails I re-visit all my tasks - and date them. This gives me a good indication of due dates and how to prioritise my day. What needs to be done today that came in urgently, what can be done a bit later. What needs to be done by end of week. I work through what the timings would be and draw a little schedule on my pad or task list in Outlook to keep me on track.
  • When I look at my e-mails I prioritize them as well, on the quick answers, think abouts, to do's, answer laters. That's the wonders of a flag button, category chooser, little folder makers. If you have them use them. I tend to only look at my e-mails in the morning, lunch time and afternoon. That's unless your work is totally e-mail related. That's for me the world won't come to a stand still if I only check three times a day. What I can say here is that when I wait on information, I would just check if the info came in and that's it.
  • Whatever work I get in any given moment I do, my motto is when it's done, it's done and I don't have to worry or think about it again. It's out of my mind. What I do know is that when you sit on a task, not do the task even if you had the time to do the task, it will mull around in your head space, stress you out, because you haven't done it yet. My advice to you - Just do it. Get it done. Then you don't have to think about it again.
  • If you have lunch, take your lunch. I know that in today's worldly pace that we want to keep sitting at our desks, work through our lunches and keep the pace going as there is just something more important that needs to be done. I'm here to say, there's only one you, you need to take care of your health. If you can take that lunch, do - go for a walk around the block, find a quiet space where you can unwind, relax, enjoy the fresh air. It's needed.
  • I know it's difficult, unplug at work. Answer only what really needs answering. Be selective.
  • When you're at work - enjoy your work - even the small little things. Find joy in the moments. Believe me those are the moments that carries you through the day.
These are just a few tips of how I manage my day. Believe me sometimes I would love a twenty five hour day - I know It's just not gonna happen. It's taking what you have at the moment, in the moment and working from there. With joy.
